Councilman Stanton Unveils New Bicycle Safety Signs
Councilman Greg Stanton will unveil new bicycle safety signs at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 17. The event will be held at Pecos Community Center, 17010 S. 48th St. The new safety signs will be posted at various locations within Ahwatukee Foothills. The new larger signs are 8 feet x 3 feet and feature information to provide drivers with a clear warning – to watch out for bicyclists and define what “share the road” means. The signs will alert motorists to the presence of bicyclists and encourage cooperative behavior.

Homeless Hotline (602) 263-8845 Valley Homeless Veterans Receive Hands-up at StandDown
More than 400 homeless veterans in the Valley are expected to receive temporary haven and assistance during the Arizona StandDown 2006 from Oct. 27 to 29 at the Phoenix Watkins Shelter, 1120 W. Watkins St.
The event will begin at 8 a.m. Friday, Oct. 27, with a 10 a.m. opening ceremony featuring Mayor Phil Gordon, District 6 Councilman Greg Stanton, District 8 Councilman Michael Johnson and former Congressman Matt Salmon. The event will conclude at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, with a special recognition ceremony hosted by Councilman Greg Stanton, chairman of the Regional Continuum of Care on Homelessness.
During the Sunday recognition ceremony, success stories will be shared and an “open mike” opportunity will give veterans a chance to talk about how the weekend activities have assisted them. Each veteran will receive a special thank you for their service – a dog tag with a StandDown message.
The veterans will be picked up at eight Valley locations and transported to the StandDown site where they will receive services that include meals, haircuts, showers, entertainment, legal and medical assistance, clothing, employment and housing placement services.
The StandDown seeks to increase the community’s awareness of the plight of the homeless American veteran, while bringing a variety of social service providers together to meet with, inform and assist the veterans in regaining a more productive, satisfying lifestyle.
StandDown is a military term that refers to a brief period of time for a soldier to leave an active combat area, to rest and regain strength before returning to battle.
The StandDown focuses not on being a handout, but a way to create an atmosphere conducive to change and recovery.
The event is coordinated by U.S. VETS – Phoenix; the city of Phoenix Human Services and Police departments; VA Medical Center – Phoenix; VA Regional Office; Arizona Department of Economic Security; Arizona Department of Veteran Services; and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, along with other individuals and agencies.
Last year’s StandDown served more than 300 homeless veterans and assisted 41 homeless veterans to enter housing programs. For more information on Arizona StandDown 2006 or to donate, call U.S. VETS – Phoenix at 602-305-8585.

New Chief of Staff Announced for Councilman Stanton’s Office
City Councilman Greg Stanton has announced the hiring of Kelly Dalton to the council office’s chief of staff position.
Dalton is a fourth-generation Arizonan and a University of Arizona graduate. She has worked as a government affairs professional for the Washington, D.C. firm B&D Sagamore, where she served as assistant vice president on the firm’s communities practice, representing local governments and other public sector clients. Her duties also included communicating priorities to members of Congress. Dalton returned home to Arizona to work as the lead staff person for the city of Goodyear mayor and city council, where she focused on community outreach initiatives, strategic planning efforts and policy development.
“Kelly’s experience on the federal and local levels will benefit the people of District 6,” said Stanton. “I am excited to work with her on serving the community through hard work, policy planning and new initiatives.”
Dalton replaces Marc Thornton who moved to a position in the city’s Planning Department. District 6 includes Ahwatukee Foothills, Arcadia, the Biltmore area and north central Phoenix.

Councilman and Attorney General Join Get Net Safe Tour to Promote Online Safety
Attorney General Terry Goddard and Councilman Greg Stanton will join the Microsoft Get Net Safe tour next week, an effort to promote Internet Safety in schools, at home and at work. The 12-city tour brings together community organizations and government agencies along with Microsoft to encourage online safety.
Goddard will kick off the tour at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, with a press conference at Monte Vista Elementary School, 3501 E. Osborn Road in Phoenix. Goddard and Stanton will talk about the Get Net Safe tour events in Phoenix as well as efforts of the Phoenix Internet Crimes Task Force to track and arrest Internet predators.
Following the press conference, Goddard and Stanton will join representatives from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children for an Internet safety school assembly. Monte Vista students will participate in the assembly.
At noon that day, Goddard will keynote a U.S./Arizona Chambers of Commerce lunch where he will discuss efforts his office is making to educate Arizonans about Internet Safety. The luncheon will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Phoenix.
On Wednesday, Aug. 23, Goddard and Stanton will participate in a parents’ forum at the Madison School District offices. The forum will feature online safety tools, information and resources from i-SAFE Inc. This forum begins at 6:30 p.m. and is open to the public.
The Get Net Safe tour will feature forums on Aug. 22, 23 and 24 throughout the Valley. These forums will provide children, teens, parents, businesses and seniors with information about online safety. This tour was developed by Microsoft and 10 partner organizations to help raise awareness of computing security and Internet safety. The tour partners include AARP, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Geek Squad 24-our Computer Support Task Force, GetNetWise, i-SAFE, Microsoft, National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Federal Trade Commission’s OnGuard Online, and the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Phoenix Youth Earn While They Learn in Summer Health Care Training ProgramToday, students of the Summer Youth Health Care Initiative participated in a graduation ceremony marking the completion of a five-week Summer Youth Work Experience Program (SYWEP), which offered academic and work experience training in the health care field.
The program, hosted by the city’s Community and Economic Development and Human Services departments, reached out to youth to generate interest in pursuing health care careers.
The program promotes health care occupations by providing professional and educational opportunities for youth in a classroom setting and at health care facilities. The youth also were encouraged to pursue higher education to achieve their career goals.
“These students are the future of Phoenix,” said Councilman Greg Stanton, who chairs the City Council Education Subcommittee. “Getting our young people experience in this crucial career field will lead to a better-trained workforce, while boosting the region’s economy.”
Students attended classes at Gateway Community College and at the Goodwill Industries of Central Arizona and worked at Valley hospitals, including St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, Maricopa Medical Center, Arizona Heart Institute and John C. Lincoln Hospital.
Funded by SYWEP and the Phoenix Workforce Connection, this program enabled students to earn five college credits by completing coursework for Introduction to Health Care and Medical Terminology for Health Care Workers, in addition to receiving 100 hours of paid work experience.
