Baseball fans set new Cactus League attendance record

Spring Training in Mesa is as popular as ever. During the first seven Chicago Cubs home games at HoHoKam Park a total of 68,063 fans have gone through the turnstiles. This number includes a single game Cactus League record of 12,903, on Sunday March 4, when the Cubs hosted their cross-town rival the Chicago White Sox. With an increase of 21.5 percent from last year the 9,723 per-game average also leads the Cactus League. Two of the first seven games have been sold out including the Cubs, White Sox game, which was sold out 35 minutes after the tickets went on sale and the Cubs game against the Milwaukee Brewers, Sunday March 11.

Prior to this year’s spring training season the City of Mesa reached an agreement with a new food service company, Ovations Food Service. Ovations invested $1 million in upgrades to the concession stands and increased the variety of foods available. After the first week of games the revenues for food, beverage and items for the two team shops have increased slightly more than 27 percent from last season.

“The investment by Ovations in the new food and merchandise areas is paying huge dividends, ‘ Stadium manager Dave Dunne said. “There is more to chose from and better food available which hopefully will keep Cactus League fans coming to HoHokam Stadium in record numbers”.

The Cubs will have a total of 16 home games this spring and tickets may be purchased by phone at 1-800-905-3315

Arizona National Guard Overrun At Border by quotes

Arizona National Guard Overrun At Border By Mexican “Gunmen”, Forced To Retreat

Famous Quotes from International Incident

Arizona National Guard Overrun At Border By Mexican “Gunmen”, Forced To Retreat

The U.S. Border was breached Wednesday night along Arizona’s border with Mexico prompting local residents to flee for their lives.

An Entry Identification Team site was also overrun Wednesday night along Arizona’s border with Mexico.

Original “Mexican Gunmen” Post

According to the (most likely satirical article at The 800lb Gorilla) these Famous Quotes were uttered related to the Incident:

“We Got Wetbacks In The Wire!”
– National Guardsman Sergeant 1st Class Butch Malone

“They were everywhere, man! “We were just minding our own business, playing hearts, and all of a sudden – BOOM! – all hell broke loose. We never even had a chance.”
– Private 1st Class Anthony Davis

An actual news article from a slightly less reliable source appears here:

Gunmen force Guard troops to flee post near border

According to that article the incident occurred in the west desert corridor between Nogales and Lukeville in the vicinity of Sasabe and these famous quotes were reported in that version of the incident.

“We don’t know exactly how many because obviously it took place in the dark.” “Nobody was able to get an accurate count.”
– National Guard Sgt. Edward Balaban

“We don’t know if this was a matter of somebody coming up accidentally on the individuals, coming up intentionally on the individuals, or some sort of a diversion,”
– Rob Daniels – spokesman for the Border Patrol’s Tucson Sector.

The reliability of the second source is somewhat suspect, considering the quality of political coverage normally found there.

Several of these quotes are probably fraudulent or misquotations but we will say no more about that without further investigation.

Perhaps a congressional committee can be appointed?

Long-term agreement to host college national championship, Fiesta Bowl and Insight Bowl by quotes

SCOTTSDALE RESORTS WILL CONTINUE HOSTING COLLEGE BOWL TEAMS

A long-term agreement to host college national championship, Fiesta Bowl and Insight Bowl teams at Scottsdale area resorts – and continue drawing their fans to Scottsdale – was approved by the Scottsdale City Council this week.
The agreement also paves the way for a new Fiesta Bowl Museum at the Scottsdale Waterfront, where the Fiesta Bowl will soon open its new headquarters.
The 20-year agreement aims to preserve a long-standing relationship between Scottsdale and the Fiesta Bowl while the organization makes significant changes beginning in 2007.  Next year, the Fiesta Bowl moves from Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe to the new Cardinals Stadium in Glendale.  Next year also marks the first time the Fiesta Bowl hosts a new Bowl Championship Series National Championship Game, which will be played at the Glendale stadium every four years.  Meanwhile, the Insight Bowl will move from Chase Field in Phoenix to Sun Devil Stadium.
Fiesta Bowl teams have stayed in Scottsdale resorts and practiced in the area for more than two decades.
The agreement relies on hotel room tax revenue to fund yearly payments to the Fiesta Bowl.  The agreement calls for a one-time payment of $500,000 to the organization in 2007.  Annual payments begin at $210,000, and include a second, identical payment when a BCS college championship comes to the Valley.
Altogether, the Fiesta Bowl would receive more than $8.2 million over 20 years.
In return, Scottsdale will continue to receive a substantial portion of the regional economic impact associated with the bowl games.  Between 2001 and 2006, the estimated regional impact ranged from $165 million to $228 million annually.  The city’s Economic Vitality Department estimates the direct return in taxes to the city over the 20-year period will range from $12 million to $15 million.

Phoenix Public Library Will Host Celebrated Hispanic Author

Acclaimed author Luis Alberto Urrea will present two “Serious Confetti” programs as part of Phoenix Public Library’s Hispanic Heritage Month observance.

Urrea, a 2005 Pulitzer Prize finalist for nonfiction, will be at Burton Barr Central Library, 1221 N. Central Ave., on Sept. 20 and at Palo Verde Library, 4402 N. 51st Ave., on Sept. 21.

The free programs will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Book sales and an author-signing will follow.

Born to a Mexican father and an Anglo mother, Urrea uses his dual cultural experiences to explore life’s major themes. His most recent book, “The Hummingbird’s Daughter,” tells the story of his great aunt, Teresa Urrea, who is known as “the Mexican Joan of Arc.”

He was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for “The Devil’s Highway: A True Story,” which explores the fate of 26 Mexican men who attempted to cross the border into southern Arizona through a scorching stretch of desert know as “the Devil’s Highway.” Four days later, only 12 were alive. Urrea’s book examines immigration issues while illuminating the lives and deaths of the victims known as “the Yuma 14.”

“Serious Confetti” is the library’s ongoing literary series that has brought many acclaimed authors and artists to Phoenix libraries. It is funded by APS, Friends of the Phoenix Public Library and the Phoenix Public Library Foundation, with additional support from the John F. Long Foundation.
