New grants make it possible for cash-strapped agencies to bring important services into the community and get innovative ideas off the ground. Yet, applying for and receiving grants is a very competitive process. To helpmembers of the nonprofit community and government agencies decipher the complexities of the grantseeking process, the City of Mesa Library will be hosting the Grantsmanship Training Program November 5-9 at the Main Library, 64 E. First St. The five-day workshop will be conducted by The Grantsmanship Center, the world’s oldest and largest training organization for the nonprofit sector.
“The Grantsmanship Center is widely recognized as the premier trainer in this new profession, providing an excellent week of experience for those wishing to learn the ‘brokering skills’ necessary for grants success,”
City of Mesa Grants Coordinator Jerry Dillehay said. “It was the first place I turned for outside training when I began my new career as Grants Coordinator for the City.”
Designed for both novice and experienced grantseekers, this workshop covers all aspects of searching for grants, writing grant proposals and negotiating with funding sources. Participants will work in teams to actually develop a grant proposal.
To ensure personal attention, registration is limited to 30 participants. The program fee of $875 includes workshop tuition and one year of TGCI membership benefits and services. Fifty percent scholarships may be available for organizations with annual operating budgets under $300,000.

Asian Pacific American Business Expo Scheduled for Nov. 4
Entrepreneurs, business owners and large corporations interested in establishing or expanding work with the Valley’s Asian Pacific American community are invited to the 11th annual Asian Pacific American Business Expo, noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Phoenix Convention Center’s new West Building, Third and Adams streets.
Mayor Phil Gordon will open this year’s event which features more than 100 small business information booths, entertainment, refreshments and door prizes. The event’s major sponsors include the city of Phoenix, Honeywell, SCF Arizona and the Asian Chamber of Commerce.
The expo encourages and enables business and banking partners to connect with the growing Asian community, as well as allows businesses and industries to tap into the Asian Pacific market. The expo also offers cultural discoveries and exchanges of Asian food, language, music, dance and costume.

Councilman and Attorney General Join Get Net Safe Tour to Promote Online Safety
Attorney General Terry Goddard and Councilman Greg Stanton will join the Microsoft Get Net Safe tour next week, an effort to promote Internet Safety in schools, at home and at work. The 12-city tour brings together community organizations and government agencies along with Microsoft to encourage online safety.
Goddard will kick off the tour at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, with a press conference at Monte Vista Elementary School, 3501 E. Osborn Road in Phoenix. Goddard and Stanton will talk about the Get Net Safe tour events in Phoenix as well as efforts of the Phoenix Internet Crimes Task Force to track and arrest Internet predators.
Following the press conference, Goddard and Stanton will join representatives from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children for an Internet safety school assembly. Monte Vista students will participate in the assembly.
At noon that day, Goddard will keynote a U.S./Arizona Chambers of Commerce lunch where he will discuss efforts his office is making to educate Arizonans about Internet Safety. The luncheon will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Phoenix.
On Wednesday, Aug. 23, Goddard and Stanton will participate in a parents’ forum at the Madison School District offices. The forum will feature online safety tools, information and resources from i-SAFE Inc. This forum begins at 6:30 p.m. and is open to the public.
The Get Net Safe tour will feature forums on Aug. 22, 23 and 24 throughout the Valley. These forums will provide children, teens, parents, businesses and seniors with information about online safety. This tour was developed by Microsoft and 10 partner organizations to help raise awareness of computing security and Internet safety. The tour partners include AARP, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Geek Squad 24-our Computer Support Task Force, GetNetWise, i-SAFE, Microsoft, National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Federal Trade Commission’s OnGuard Online, and the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Phoenix Arizona –Certification Workshops for Minority, Women and Small Business Owners
Minority, woman and small business owners in Maricopa County are invited to attend free workshops and learn more about the city of Phoenix business certification programs and how they can provide opportunities for small business economic growth.
The city’s Equal Opportunity Department is offering a yearlong series of monthly educational workshops to help business owners complete the application process for certification with the city as a minority-, woman-owned or small business enterprise. The workshops offer in-depth information about the requirements, process and benefits of becoming certified.
The next workshop will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, at Longview Community Center, 4040 N. 14th St.
