TEMPE, Ariz. – “Visions of Arizona: People, Places and Things from our own
experiences,” the 2007 senior art exhibition will be on display from
8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday (except on city-observed holidays), from
Oct. 25 through Jan. 24 in the Public Library Second Floor Gallery, 3500 S.
Rural Road.
Admission is free.
This exhibition features Tempe senior artists from five city-sponsored art
classes at the Pyle Adult Recreation Center. The classes provide the
opportunity for individuals to enhance their skills and experiment with new
and traditional techniques and materials.
The students come from widely varied backgrounds and all parts of the world.
Nearly all of these students have found their creativity to be a source of
deep personal satisfaction and growth, keeping them young in both mind and
heart.
Artists display work in acrylic, oil, water color, colored pencil and other
drawing media. This year’s exhibit is a collection of artwork designed from
artists’ personal “Arizona” experiences.

Tempe, Ariz. – Retirement can be more than golfing, traveling and sitting
around the house. Participate in an informal panel discussion of the
challenges and opportunities of post-career life.
If you’ve recently retired or are thinking about retirement, sign up for the
Retirement Transition Talk, on Tuesday, Sept. 25, from 7-8:30 p.m., at Tempe
Connections Café at the Tempe Public Library, 3500 S. Rural Rd.
The panel includes successful professionals who have made the leap and are
enjoying active lifestyles full of fun and fulfillment. They will share
their personal experiences, tips and techniques for maintaining social
connections, engaging in the community and finding purpose and meaning in a
post-career life.
Ask questions, share ideas, and meet new people who are committed to
reinvention and renewal in the second half of life. Speakers include: Ken
Bond, a retired Deputy Chief Juvenile Probation Officer; Doug Cullinane, a
retired civil/environmental engineer; and Ilene Dode, retired President/CEO
of Empact Suicide Prevention Center.
The session is $5 per person and includes coffee and dessert. For

Tempe Connections is a nonprofit community service program and café based at
the Tempe Public Library. The proceeds from the full-service coffee bar

Arizona’s 50 Year Transformations Arizona is growing, but this is not news to anyone.
Yesterday it really hit home. Over the past 20 years I have had numerous meetings at the Salt River Project’s modest, single story administration building in a desert setting on Project Drive. Yesterday I could hardly find it within the massive complex of hi-rise buildings. Sitting I the familiar lobby I thought about Arizona’s real transformations.
In the first half of the 1990’s it was hydraulic innovations that delivered water from the massive dams through SRP canals that created our agricultural economy. The second half of the 1990’s was driven by a company about one mile west of SRP on Washington Street: Goettl Air Conditioning. They introduced evaporative coolers and then air conditioners that transformed Arizona’s economy once again.
So here we sit in the early 21st century, wondering where we go next. What innovation in infrastructure will transform Arizona once again? We are a unique state in that we are one of the few that is fresh and young, and has a history of astounding growth and transformation. Incrementalism will not serve Arizona well in the next couple of decades. Our governance, education and business communities have a sense of this need to build a third great infrastructure. We have good success with broad band telecommunications which started its surge ten years ago. With a successful Broadband Authority strategy Arizona will complete its rural rollout in a few years.
But we need an innovation much more powerful and unique, to match the Arizona pioneers of the past century. And to no surprise to prior readers of this blog — that transformation will be the eLearning system adoption within all Arizona K-12 classrooms statewide.

Exploring Your Passion – Putting It To Work
Have you ever awakened in the morning feeling stuck in your job search or in your current position and frustrated that you had no other career options that inspired or motivated you to take action?
The purpose of this one-day workshop is to assist people who may be stuck in their job search or in their current jobs. Often individuals limit themselves to what they “have always done” because it was the career that defined them for many years. They tend to lose sight of the many skills and strengths that they have developed through their life experience.
For those of you who have suspected that you were falling short of your passion or “calling,” this workshop may be of help to you! The program is designed to highlight tools to assist individuals determine where they might be stuck and to begin to identify their strengths, talents and preferences.
Facilitator: Maria Wojtczak has 20+ years of organization development (OD) experience and worked with a wide range of organizations. She brings extensive experience in the field of adult learning concepts, and in the design and facilitation of adult learning experiences. In her OD practice, Maria coached senior leadership and consulted with senior executives, high-level education personnel, as well as middle management. Maria’s focus, in her consulting practice and in her business, is organizational effectiveness and the development of individuals. Maria is a graduate of the University of Michigan and a member of SJN’s Board.
