to Stop Gun Violence in South Phoenix
June 05 , 2008 by EditorA gun buy-back, a neighborhood cleanup and community walk are part of the “Take Back Your Neighborhood” campaign recently unveiled by Mayor Phil Gordon.
The month-long campaign will focus on four specific neighborhoods that, according to police, experience a disproportionate amount of gun violence and include several events specifically designed to make the neighborhoods a safer place.
Joining the mayor were Phoenix City Council members Michael Johnson, District 8, and Michael Nowakowski, District 7, and representatives of the Phoenix Police Department, U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Arizona, Silent Witness, Phoenix Fire Department, Silent Witness and Arizonans for Gun Safety.
The goal of the program is to empower the residents of these neighborhoods to take action to prevent future gun violence. The neighborhoods involved in the project and their boundaries are:
7/11 Fight Back (7th to 15th avenues and Buckeye Road to I-17), Lindo Park (19th to 23rd avenues and Roeser Road to Southern Avenue), South Vista (12th to 16th streets and Roeser Road to Southern Avenue), Hermoso Park (16th to 24th streets and Vineyard to Broadway roads).
Spearheading the Take Back Your Neighborhood program is Arizonans for Gun Safety, a nonprofit, community-based organization dedicated to reducing gun deaths and injuries.
In addition, several private individuals and companies have pledged their support, including APS, Gust Rosenfeld, Jerry and Joan Colangelo, Phoenix Community Alliance, SRP, the Arizona Republic and La Voz.
The Take Back Your Neighborhood program is a coordinated effort between the city of Phoenix, Phoenix Police Department, ATF, Arizona U.S. Attorney’s Office and Arizonans for Gun Safety to dramatically reduce the amount of violent crime in the four Phoenix neighborhoods.
The events for the bilingual campaign include:
The “Steps to Stop Gun Violence” community walk 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at Lindo Park, 19th Avenue and Roeser Road, led by faith-based communities in the four neighborhoods. The walk will culminate with a free breakfast and the distribution of free gun locks.
Two job fairs scheduled for Tuesday, June 17, and Thursday, June 19, to help neighborhood residents take charge of their lives.
A neighborhood cleanup event 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, presented by the City of Phoenix Neighborhood Services Department to help encourage community involvement. In addition to dumpsters and garbage bags, paint and rollers will be provided to stamp out graffiti.
A “no questions asked” gun buy-back program 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28, will award a $100 grocery gift card to anyone who brings in a firearm. Buyback locations will include the Phoenix Police Department’s South Mountain Precinct, as well as community churches in each of the four participating neighborhoods.
A community celebration of Take Back Your Neighborhood month 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 28, from at the South Mountain Community Center. Activities will include music, food, games and free swimming in the community pool.
The Take Back Your Neighborhood campaign will include weekly door hangers on every one of the 4,000 homes and apartments in the participating communities, as well as billboards, posters and event fliers promoting specific events. Additionally, 600 free gun locks will be distributed throughout the duration of the program to promote firearm safety.

The Arizona Center for Divorce Education, established in 2004, was formed by a group of professionals to help educate and assist individuals and couples with the financial, legal, and emotional issues faced during the divorce process. Thursday June 7th they will be holding a Free Divorce Seminar, where a team of experts will advise on the financial, legal, and emotional pitfalls to avoid during divorce proceedings. Participants will learn how to protect retirement benefits, credit rating, emotional health, and determine a fair division of assets. The seminar is open to the public free of charge, and will be held from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at the Franciscan Renewal Center 5802 E Lincoln Dr Paradise Valley, AZ 85253 in the Brother Anthony Room.

The purpose of this one-day workshop is to assist people who may be stuck in their job search or in their current jobs. Often individuals limit themselves to what they “have always done” because it was the career that defined them for many years. They tend to lose sight of the many skills and strengths that they have developed through their life experience.
For those of you who have suspected that you were falling short of your passion or “calling,” this workshop may be of help to you! The program is designed to highlight tools to assist individuals determine where they might be stuck and to begin to identify their strengths, talents and preferences.
Facilitator: Maria Wojtczak has 20+ years of organization development (OD) experience and worked with a wide range of organizations. She brings extensive experience in the field of adult learning concepts, and in the design and facilitation of adult learning experiences. In her OD practice, Maria coached senior leadership and consulted with senior executives, high-level education personnel, as well as middle management. Maria’s focus, in her consulting practice and in her business, is organizational effectiveness and the development of individuals. Maria is a graduate of the University of Michigan and a member of SJN’s Board.

Tempe partners with residents to eliminate alley weeds
TEMPE, Ariz. – Monsoon rains have created an overgrowth of weeds in
Tempe’s alleys unseen in years, according to the Public Works
department. In response, the department began spraying weeds in the
alleys more than three weeks ago.
“All alleys from the north city limit to US 60 are complete,” said John
Osgood, deputy public works manager. “All alleys south of US 60 are
being sprayed this week and next week.”
Tempe has more than 165 miles of unpaved alleys and, by city code,
property owners are charged with taking care of the alley space directly
behind their homes. As a result, the city is requesting help from
residents in removing the dead weeds and keeping alleys as well
maintained as possible.
“Ideally they will bag up what they can and place them in the 300-gallon
container in the alley,” Osgood said. “Or they can bundle them up and
place them in a pile adjacent to their alley wall.”

Councilman and Attorney General Join Get Net Safe Tour to Promote Online Safety
Attorney General Terry Goddard and Councilman Greg Stanton will join the Microsoft Get Net Safe tour next week, an effort to promote Internet Safety in schools, at home and at work. The 12-city tour brings together community organizations and government agencies along with Microsoft to encourage online safety.
Goddard will kick off the tour at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, with a press conference at Monte Vista Elementary School, 3501 E. Osborn Road in Phoenix. Goddard and Stanton will talk about the Get Net Safe tour events in Phoenix as well as efforts of the Phoenix Internet Crimes Task Force to track and arrest Internet predators.
Following the press conference, Goddard and Stanton will join representatives from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children for an Internet safety school assembly. Monte Vista students will participate in the assembly.
At noon that day, Goddard will keynote a U.S./Arizona Chambers of Commerce lunch where he will discuss efforts his office is making to educate Arizonans about Internet Safety. The luncheon will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Phoenix.
On Wednesday, Aug. 23, Goddard and Stanton will participate in a parents’ forum at the Madison School District offices. The forum will feature online safety tools, information and resources from i-SAFE Inc. This forum begins at 6:30 p.m. and is open to the public.
The Get Net Safe tour will feature forums on Aug. 22, 23 and 24 throughout the Valley. These forums will provide children, teens, parents, businesses and seniors with information about online safety. This tour was developed by Microsoft and 10 partner organizations to help raise awareness of computing security and Internet safety. The tour partners include AARP, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Geek Squad 24-our Computer Support Task Force, GetNetWise, i-SAFE, Microsoft, National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Federal Trade Commission’s OnGuard Online, and the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Public Invited to Review and Discuss Proposed Alternatives for Phoenix Goodyear Airport
Phoenix, AZ — The City of Phoenix Aviation Department is inviting the public to an informational workshop on the master planning process for Phoenix Goodyear Airport. The workshop will be held Wednesday August 16, 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Goodyear, 2000 N. Litchfield Road. This is the third such workshop hosted by the City of Phoenix Aviation Department.
The Airport Master plan currently being prepared for Phoenix Goodyear Airport will ultimately provide recommendations regarding the future development of the airport. Phoenix Goodyear Airport is owned and operated by the City of Phoenix.
During the August 16 workshop, proposed alternatives will be reviewed and discussed. Members of the project team will be available for one-on-one discussions. There will also be opportunities for the public to provide written or verbal comments. Members of the public are invited to drop in any time between 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
