Tempe to hold celebration for TIM’s 10th birthday

TEMPE, Ariz. – The city of Tempe transit program, Tempe in Motion (TIM)
will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Tempe in Motion program Sept.
16 from 9 a.m. to noon on Fifth Street between College and Forest
avenues in Tempe. As part of the TIM Turns 10 celebration, the city will
also hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Tempe Transportation Center.

More than 500 people are expected to participate in the TIM Turns 10
celebration.  Remarks by Tempe Vice Mayor Hut Hutson, Congressman JD
Hayworth, Congressman Ed Pastor and Tempe Transportation Commission
Chair Don Cassano will occur at 9:45 a.m. All participants will receive
free food and artist-designed T-shirts. Other activities will include
face painting, a tie-dye activity, environmentally-friendly “green”
vendor demonstrations and music. As part of the celebration, people may
board any bus in Tempe Sept. 16 and enjoy a free ride courtesy of TIM.

In addition, people will be asked to make their mark on a Tempe city
bus. Participants will be encouraged to put their hand print on the
outside of the bus, which will then be incorporated into the Tempe fleet
and used to transport passengers on city bus routes.

The Tempe Transportation Center, scheduled to open spring 2008, will be
located at Fifth Street and Forest Avenue. The project includes a
mixed-use, three-story, 40,000 sq. ft. building, an exterior shaded
courtyard and a transit plaza serving the new Metro light rail and local
and regional bus patrons. The project includes a 2,000 square foot
conference/community room, which will highlight the sustainable
strategies implemented in the project. The architects for the project
are OTAK and Architekton, and the contractor is Adolfson & Peterson
Construction. The Transportation Center will be one of the first
buildings of its kind in the nation to be submitted for Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification by the U.S.
Green Building Council.

Tempe is actively supporting LEED certified buildings in the
community. U.S. Green Building Council is the nation’s foremost
coalition of leaders from across the building industry working to
promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and
healthy places to live and work. Green building is a whole-systems
approach using design and building techniques to minimize environmental
impact and reduce energy consumption of buildings, while contributing to
the health of the occupants.

TIM Turns 10 sponsors include Starbucks, IKEA, Valley Metro, Wildflower
Bread Company, Veolia Transportation, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Arizona
State University and Tempe in Motion.
