Phoenix Public Library Will Host Celebrated Hispanic Author
Acclaimed author Luis Alberto Urrea will present two “Serious Confetti” programs as part of Phoenix Public Library’s Hispanic Heritage Month observance.
Urrea, a 2005 Pulitzer Prize finalist for nonfiction, will be at Burton Barr Central Library, 1221 N. Central Ave., on Sept. 20 and at Palo Verde Library, 4402 N. 51st Ave., on Sept. 21.
The free programs will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Book sales and an author-signing will follow.
Born to a Mexican father and an Anglo mother, Urrea uses his dual cultural experiences to explore life’s major themes. His most recent book, “The Hummingbird’s Daughter,” tells the story of his great aunt, Teresa Urrea, who is known as “the Mexican Joan of Arc.”
He was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for “The Devil’s Highway: A True Story,” which explores the fate of 26 Mexican men who attempted to cross the border into southern Arizona through a scorching stretch of desert know as “the Devil’s Highway.” Four days later, only 12 were alive. Urrea’s book examines immigration issues while illuminating the lives and deaths of the victims known as “the Yuma 14.”
“Serious Confetti” is the library’s ongoing literary series that has brought many acclaimed authors and artists to Phoenix libraries. It is funded by APS, Friends of the Phoenix Public Library and the Phoenix Public Library Foundation, with additional support from the John F. Long Foundation.
