Phoenix Convention Center Opens and Welcomes Capella University

Phoenix Convention Center Director Jay Green officially opened the new center and welcomed the first delegates from Capella University on Sunday by presenting Provost Karen Viechnicki with a ceremonial key to the building.

“This opening of the new West Building marks the beginning of a new and exciting future that will be a vibrant and vital downtown with a convention center expansion that will be fully completed in late 2008. The completion of this expansion project positions the Phoenix Convention Center among the top twenty centers in North America,” said Jay Green, director, Phoenix Convention Center. “Residents, along with city and state officials, envisioned a downtown area that would attract visitors from around the country and even the world. Due to their wisdom and vision, we are here today with our inaugural event, Capella University, in the first phase of the new Phoenix Convention Center,” said Green.

The voter-approved $600 million convention center expansion is being completed in phases. Phase One, the new West Building, which opened on Sunday, features more than 150,000 square feet of rentable space. Phase Two, which will be completed in late 2008, features 635,000 square feet of rentable space.

The new four-story-building includes a 62,000 square-foot-underground-exhibition space divisible into two halls, with columns on a 90-foot-by-90-foot grid, a large prefunction/registration area and the Metro Café.

The street level features 16 meeting rooms with 26,000 square feet of space, a soaring 90 foot stone and glass atrium, public art featuring a large-scale mirror by internationally renowned sculptor Louise Bourgeois, a business center, visitor’s center, main box office and retail space.

The conference center level features 21,000 square feet of high-level corporate meeting rooms designed to meet International Association of Conference Centers and the International Association of Congress Centers standards, a 192-seat lecture hall with plug in data ports at each work station, a conference voting and audience response system, plus four translation booths, state-of-the art technology, ergonomic seating and comfortable breakout areas.

The upper level, column-free, 45,000 square-foot-ballroom also can be used for exhibition or meeting space with retractable riser seating for 1,200 and a full-service kitchen.

The Phoenix Convention Center was designed with meeting planner guidance and wisdom from day one. All exhibition hall floors are scored on a 10-foot-by-10-foot grid, coordinated with the 30-foot-by-30-foot utility grid to reduce the amount of time and labor needed to set up each event.

By incorporating environmentally-friendly technology and products in its design and construction, the new Phoenix Convention Center will provide an energy and water efficient public facility.

More than 800 attended Capella University’s colloquium and seminars. The Minneapolis based online university currently serves more than 15,000 learners from all 50 states and 63 countries. It is a national leader in online education, committed to providing high-caliber academic excellence and pursing balanced business growth.
